FIFTY SHADES OF SHADEISM
SHADEISM is the discrimination that exists between the lighter-skinned and darker-skinned members of the same community. Lighter skin tones are considered more beautiful, desirable, capable and are rank higher within the community. It has been prevalent in INDIAN culture for centuries as a product of slavery, colonialism and even ancient mythology (in which mostly demon are represented darker). In Pre-colonialism, Rajas and Ranis (King and Queens) were depicted as light-skinned on murals.
Fair skin advertisement, matrimonial advertisement (in which there is a clear demand of fair skin bride/groom), the dominance of white person in cinemas, modeling are some crude example of this menace.
In case of women, the situation is far worse and they have to face discrimination in every aspect of life. From childhood to marriage she has to face hatred, less preference, rejections many times which leads to stress, severe mental trauma, and even suicide.
It is so inherent that it seems to be okay in our daily life. Fairness cream, face wash, skin bleaching (the most outrageous example of skin bleaching comes from commercial that supports bleaching a brown skinned vagina, so her lover will find her attractive and will have sex with her), fancy beauty parlor and cosmetics exasperated it.We are so blind in rat-race of attaining this materials quality that we forgot our holy ethics and unable to find out inner beauty which has no color. I am admitting that I am Shadiest and feel deeply ashamed of myself but simultaneously I pray to God that give me strength so that one day I’ll free this devil mindset. And YOU?
